A little bit more Sons… ‘cause I’m still not over it
So usually I don’t nitpick Sutter’s process, he may not be the most deep of showrunners but Sons is well written and heartbreaking. We’ve come so far from the first season, where they were a family and the biggest concern was hiding guns from the cops. Everything was going to fall apart at some point (although both Tara and Opie had to be Ophelia? Thats just overkill). I guess what still bothers me is the wild inconsistency in Tara last night. My Tara (the Tara we’ve seen for 6 seasons) would have fought back, she would have scraped and clawed until she couldn’t anymore. She’s taken Gemma before, she’s punched her, killed for her and beaten women to bloody pulps and in her fear, she ran, but she never fought. That just doesn’t seem like Tara to me, she has never allowed Gemma to throw her around, I just wanted her to fight, to scream. I know the silence was for dramatic effect, so you could feel the fear, see the moment Tara knew Gemma was going to kill her, but I so badly wanted it to go the other way and to even see a hint of that fight might have made it easier.
Can you tell I’m not over it? I think people sometimes wonder how you can get so connected to a show and a character that their death feels devastating and the answer is, Sons wasn’t always this. The crew cracked before but they never completely fell apart, they always came back together and there was love there, even between Gemma and Tara. To see the other Queen, Old lady, matriarch, brutally murdered is like watching the death of that good side, because you know there isn’t any hope left, Tara was the one who could and should have made it out and that was stolen from her by the one woman who couldn’t let Jax go. Gemma claims to do everything for Jax but she’s taken everything from him, his father, his future, his wife and now his kids because there won’t be enough of Jax left to piece back together for them.
There’s also been some issues with Sutter’s view of women and giving them violent deaths, I think the reality is everyone gets violent deaths, women or men, in terms of how it actually happens. What makes this more brutal is that Gemma was desperate and out of her mind and completely lost any humanity she had, she killed her own daughter (she’s referred to Tara as that before), and that makes it so much more stomach churning. I think Sutter is an evil prick for what he did and how visceral he needed to make it so we felt that pain with Jax (not that we wouldn’t have felt it anyway). I think that brutality will come into play next season when the death toll will ratchet up even more, Jax saw the blood, knows that Tara had her head bashed in, it was overkill and when he figures out it was Gemma, that is going to come up. She didn’t just kill Tara she tortured her essentially, making sure her last moments were as painful and awful as possible and she did it in the home she shares with Jax and the kids. Basically Gemma’s death will probably be the most gruesome because Jax will only have vengeance left at that point.
So yeah don’t watch this show, unless you want to be a useless sobbing mess who doesn’t think they’ll ever feel again, or love a character the same.
